LITHOSTRATIGRAPHY
It is appropriate to classify the layered rock sequence primarily on the basis of their lithological characters.
∙Beds: Defined as a layer of homogenous or gradational lithology
∙Beds in basin are classified into two parts:
(1)Strata: Greater than 1cm(>1cm) thick
(2)Lamination: Less than 1cm(<1cm) thick
∙The basic unit of a lithostratigraphic classification that is mappable on an intermediate scale(1:50,000) of geological mapping is designated as "formation".
(In Hierarchical order)
(1) Supergroup
(2) Group
(3) Formation (Fundamental unit)
(4) Member
(5) Bed
